In this momentous 40th birthday year, Polyglot has some very exciting news. We’re moving! The time has come to stretch our wings, so we are packing up and shipping across town to Abbotsford Convent.
Just four kilometres from Melbourne’s CBD and spread over 16 acres, the Abbotsford Convent – with its 11 historic buildings and gardens – is Australia’s largest multi-arts precinct. It is home to over 100 studios, two galleries, cafes, a radio station, a school, and an abundance of green open space. Each year the Convent welcomes a diverse range of art projects, rehearsals, workshops, exhibitions, markets, events and festivals.
Polyglot Theatre has been based in South Yarra for 38 of its 40 years. Over this time, the company has grown from two staff members to twelve, and transitioned from presenting puppet shows in school halls to touring large-scale Play Space works around the world, running multiple community projects each year, and advocating nationally and internationally for the role of the arts in children’s development.
Polyglot is taking up a purpose-designed tenancy in the beautifully restored Sacred Heart building, surrounded by diverse, creative, inspiring friends. In addition, an exciting new partnership between Polyglot and Abbotsford Convent will see us performing, creating and testing new work with children and families as part of the Convent Kids program every year. This means that Polyglot will be more visible and accessible – creating more opportunities for our skilled artists to grow as leaders, and to give young people a platform from which they can make their voices heard.
The partnership kicks off with a special, free presentation of Polyglot’s spectacular, world-renowned installation, Tangle, in the Sacred Heart Courtyard at the Convent on 13 – 14 April 2018. For more information and to book, visit the Polyglot calendar. We look forward to seeing you there to play and celebrate with us!
“Our move to Abbotsford Convent is such an exciting new phase of Polyglot’s life. We know we will be welcomed as a valued part of an energetic creative community – and at last we’ll have neighbours! We are thrilled to be moving to a space where ideas flow, where our staff and artists can work and create, and where the focus on kids is totally authentic.” Sue Giles – Artistic Director
Over the next few months, we need to pack up our old home in South Yarra, design and equip our new space to meet the company’s needs now and into the future, and relocate 40 years’ worth of Polyglot treasure. To make our dreams a reality, we need to reach our $50,000 fundraising target by 15 May 2018. If you’ve been planning to give, now is the time.
Every dollar that we raise up to $50,000 by this date will be doubled by Creative Partnerships Australia’s Plus1 matched funding.
All donations over $2 are tax deductible, and every single contribution, no matter the size, is a big step towards Polyglot’s future. Please give today, and help make Polyglot’s next 40 years shine.
